Your first road bike should match the riding you want to do and the budget you can comfortably spend. A familiar brand name alone does not tell you whether a particular bike is right for you.
Start with your riding plans
Think about shorter social rides, longer weekend rides, or racing. Use those plans to compare the bike’s geometry, gearing, and tyre clearance. Ask a shop to explain unfamiliar specifications.
Budget for the whole first ride
Leave room for a properly fitted cycling helmet, lights, a basic repair kit, and an initial service if you are buying used. Compare the complete cost rather than the bicycle price alone.
Check the fit before choosing the deal
Frame size labels differ between brands. Look up the manufacturer’s geometry chart and arrange a test ride or a fit consultation when possible.
New or used?
A used bike can be worth considering when the size, condition, and service history are clear. A new bike may include shop setup and manufacturer support. Read our inspection checklist before agreeing to buy a used bicycle.
