Keep your first ride manageable. Choose a familiar route and leave time to learn the bicycle rather than chase a distance target.
Prepare your bike
Have the bicycle set up and checked by a competent mechanic if you are unsure of its condition. Follow the bicycle and component manufacturers’ instructions.
Prepare yourself
- A correctly fitted cycling helmet.
- Water and appropriate food for your plans.
- Lights and clothing suited to visibility and conditions.
- A charged phone and emergency contact details.
- A repair kit you know how to use.
Plan around conditions
Check the weather, route access, and traffic before leaving. Share your plans with someone and choose a route you can shorten.
